Water harvesting and soil conservation in African countries
By tuning their ability to understand nature and experiment with the available resources, farmers in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have developed original, low-cost technologies for water harvesting and soil conservation. Some of the practices involve collecting rainwater from the road and directing it to cultivated fields, reclaiming riverbeds by planting crops and building natural barriers to stop erosion. Based on the findings of a project called ‘Promoting Farmer Innovation’ in East Africa, these technologies will be featured in a book named ‘Farmers’ Initiatives in Land Husbandry’ by Kithinji Mutunga and Will Critchley, published by the Regional Land Management Unit (RELMA), Nairobi. We have selected here, one of these innovative technologies to share the richness of experimentation in everyday life.
