Workshop on
Inventors of India : Knowledge Network
for Incubating Innovations into Enterprises
September 24-26, 2004

Inventions and Innovations by individuals in formal and informal sector have to become an important driver of change in our society. In response to the previous workshop on Indian Incubator for Innovation Based Enterprises (I3E) organized in December 1998, we have set up the Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship and an incubator at IIM Ahmedabad. The second workshop aims to provide a platform for collaboration among inventors, innovators and other stakeholders for building value chain, evolve policy options for strengthening inter-institutional linkages and innovation-based enterprises in India.
Objectives:
1.

To learn from the experience of innovators who have either already converted their ideas or technologies into enterprise or have still to do that.
2.

To identify various policy and procedural bottlenecks that come in the way of converting innovations into enterprises.
3.

To explore the possibility of some of the potential innovations being selected for further value addition through the IIMA, Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE).
4.

To develop online and offline collaborative framework among innovators as well as other stakeholders.
5.

To build bridges between high impact grassroots innovators from informal sector and the high tech innovators in formal sector so as to invigorate both.
6.

To develop a clearinghouse through which potential ideas and innovations can be optimized for linkage with other entrepreneurs or investors as the case may be.
7.

To draw upon the expertise in the formal R&D sector to add value to various innovations.
 
Pedagogy:
 

One full day will be spent on high tech and another day on high impact innovators. Third day overlap is planned in between so that bridges between both sets of innovators can be built. The last day of the workshop may also have a clearinghouse with the venture firms. The best of the technologies may be presented from both the streams to assess their potential for angel funding.

The participants will include a few innovators from the first workshop but majority will be new inventors and innovators or innovation-based entrepreneurs whether awarded by Government or not. Attempt will also be made to select some of the technical students who are pursuing or have already completed innovative projects as a part of their course. Various R&D institutions are invited to identify scientists who might have proprietary technologies, which could be converted into enterprises. We are looking for innovation-based entrepreneurs who are seeking linkages with R&D experts, peers and policy makers.

Interface between innovations and intellectual property, venture finance and R&D would be pursued in small groups as well as through panel discussions.
 
Output:
 
1.

An improved understanding of the national innovation system in formal and informal sectors.
2.

Identification of some potential technologies for incubation at IIMA.
3.

Operational framework for collaborative learning among innovators in formal and informal sectors.

The objective of the workshop is to invite high tech and high impact innovations by individuals in the organized and unorganized sectors. We request interested scientists, inventors, entrepreneurs, policy makers, venture fund managers, industrial associations and other stakeholders to write to us in this regard.
