Documentation and Dissemination of Indigenous knowledge and Grassroots Innovations:
SEVA has been Honey Bee Network partner since inception. SEVA coordinates the regional node in Tamil Nadu "Num Vali Velanmai" and brings out the regional language newsletter in the name of the network. It has been scouting grassroots innovations and traditional/indigenous Knowledge in partnership with SRISTI. The regional database of Grassroots innovations and Traditional Knowledge contains 1500 examples as now. Involving School Students for Documenting Indigenous Knowledge SEVA
has promoted Eco-clubs
in 25 Schools in Virudhunagar District. School
Students are involved in documenting Indigenous Knowledge, planting
medicinal plants and addressing local environmental problems. SEVA
has been collaborating with Department of Environment, Tamil Nadu
Govt. for promoting Eco-clubs in Schools of Virudhunagar District. Inaugural
function of Eco clubs was held on 4.2.2001 at W. Pudhupatti village.
Training / Workshop on Indigenous Knowledge, Ethnoveterinary practices and Sustainable Agriculture SEVA
has been publishing Num Vali Velanmai Newsletter for communicating
indigenous knowledge and innovations for sustainable natural
resource management for the last 10 years.
Inspite of its efforts it has not been able to reach out
illiterate farmers and interior communities. To
experiment on news ways it designed a two days training
module for demonstration of best indigenous practices. It has
trained 719 members (women, farmers, NGO field staff) in Indigenous
Knowledge based green technologies in 15 centres in collaboration
with other NGOs and volunteers. SEVA has been organising
Ethnoveterinary training programme exclusively for rural
youth; this is a 3 weeks
course with local healers as resource person. CAPART
has extended support for training 100 rural youth on Ethnoveterinary
and first aid skills. Tamil Nadu Grassroots Innovators Association
SEVA
promoted a state level grassroots innovators association in January
2001. Thirty innovators
from various parts of Tamil Nadu attended the workshop held on 28th
January 2001 at Thaniparai, Watrap, Virudhunagar District. SEVA
has collaborated with National Innovation Foundation for scouting
innovations from year 2000 in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. The
competition announcement was printed as posters and pamphlets and
distributed through official and non-official channels so as to
reach different parts of the state. SEVA
also involved All India Radio and local news
media for announcing the competition for best entries / innovations.
The List of outstanding innovators who have been awarded by
National Innovation Foundation for the year 2000 from Tamil Nadu
(scouted by SEVA) is shown here. SEVA has
forwarded a project proposal under TePP of DST for 11 innovators. SEVA
in future involve in validation and value addition of innovative
products.
National Competition for Scouting Unaided Grassroots Technological Innovations
SEVA has partnered with National Innovation Foundation (NIF), Ahmedabad <www.nifindia.org> to scout unaided grassroots technological innovations. It has received the first price for scouting innovation in the first competition for the year 2000. For details please see <http://www.nifindia.org/awards.html>
