Laitkynsew village, Sohra (Cherrapunji) to Smit,, Shillong, Meghalaya
Date - Jan 03,2011 to Jan 31,2011

Laitkynsew village is famous for the living root bridges, which were built across the local monsoon-fed river by the members of Khasi and Jaintia tribes. They brought the secondary roots of trees on either side of the river to the opposite side and embedded them. Gradually with time, these roots grew and strengthened, giving rise to the present day living root bridges. Given the enthusiasm of one of the youngest HBN collaborator and SCAI coordinator, Jaydeep Mandal, the entire logistics of Shodh Yatra fell in place though a very close network of volunteers of DRCSC having many initiatives in the region; Basudha- an NGO having a collection of 540 traditional rice varieties, Social Upliftment Trust, a grassroots organisation and volunteers1 of SCAI. There were professors from China, students from European universities and journalist from Switzerland besides farmers, volunteers, students and professionals from all over the country walking together from three places in Purulia and Jharkhand. They finally met at Bhagabandh to walk together to conclude the physical yatra at Basudha. But then the inner journey may have continued further for many of them. Some of them were deeply impressed by the standards of sanitation among Santhal tribals in Purulia; their aesthetics and willingness to share knowledge. Gujarati farmers could not resist expressing a feeling that many farm implements from Saurashtra could be used there; similarly, the lack of water conservation efforts by state and civil society groups (except service centre) also appeared a bit strange to the Yatris. read more...

The 19th Shodhyatra truly began right from the Srinagar air port. We went to visit the Department of Applied Electronics, Srinagar University headed by Dr Bhatt who has started assisting Mushtaq Ahmed Dar. Mushtaq is not only a key organizer of the Shodhyatra but also a very creative innovator. He has developed a low cost tree climber as well as a walnut cracker. The walnut cracker made by him was crude and used two wooden drums. But Dr Bhatt and his team have been working with Mushtaq and have used iron drums with appropriate structures to enhance the efficiency of the machine and increase its throughput. read more...

13th Shodh Yatra
From Nana Ambla to Balachadi, Jamnagar, Gujarat
Date - May 01,2004 to May 08,2004

The 13th Shodhyatra held from May 1- May 8, 2004, covered a distance of 150 km in Gujarat. 40 Shodhyatris travelled from Nana Ambla to Balachadi, a route that constantly kept them close to the seashore. In fact, this was the first time that the Shodhyatra was taking place close to the sea. The objectives of the Shodhyatra remained the same as before: documenting traditional local knowledge and felicitating knowledge holders with special focus on women centurions who are a unique resource and to encourage children to be concerned about biodiversity. This was done primarily in the form of involving children in biodiversity contests that were held in different villages. read more...

12th Shodh Yatra

The journey started from Guddethota village in Jaipura. The first day of the Shodhyatra saw the beginning of the felicitation programmes that we would be holding at the different villages. We also had the opportunity to see the villagers perform for us in a cultural programme. One farmer, Venkatapaiyya, told us that today we have to start two journeys -- one of our inner self and another, the outer Shodhyatra. We need to undertake both these journeys and we can do one in the absence of other. read more...
