Disasters and the World wide Web- by Ms. Sudha Maheshwari

This paper is an attempt to study how the World Wide Web is being used now and how it can be used in the future for disaster management. This study is based on only some of the multitude of Web sites which deal with disasters and is in no way all-encompassing. It is an analytical study of how the World Wide Web may be used in the times of disasters.  Read More.....

Earthquake engineering Lessons from recent Indian earthquakes:

Damaging earthquakes provide excellent full-scale test results on real-life structures; such results involve no modeling errors or approximations. Moreover, the results are for everyone to see and no sophisticated interpretation of results by the “experts” is required.

Preparing for Earthquakes- Where India stands:

Understanding earthquakes is an on-going process. Two questions are most frequently asked: (a) Why do earthquakes occur? and (b) Can we predict earthquakes? Let us address the first one. There is a large differential pressure and temperature between the center of the Earth and its surface; the pressure inside is about 4 million atmospheres and the temperature about 6000°C.

UNICEF Report on the Drought and Floods in India

Drought in India: The severe drought that hit several states in India during the first half of the year was followed by floods in many parts of the country. While both water scarcity in summer and floods during the monsoon are seasonal phenomena, their recurrence requires a long-term strategy for better water management. It should be underlined that India is affected by other such recurrent natural disasters, such as cyclones. Go to http://www.unicef.org/emerg/India22Aug.html

Chamoli (Himalaya, India) Earthquake of 29 March 1999

The Chamoli earthquake of 29 March 1999 in northern India is yet another important event from the viewpoint of Himalayan seismotectonics and seismic resistance of non-engineered constructions. The earthquake occurred in a part of the Central Himalaya, which  is highly prone to earthquakes and has been placed in the highest seismic zone (zone V) of India.

A New York Times Learning Network Lesson Plan Unit

The Learning Network of New York Times has developed lesson plan units that use recent New York Times articles as springboards for examining important curricular topics in interesting and exciting ways.  There is a special unit on natural disasters and covers many issues related to disasters such as first aid, volcanoes, floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes – even though most of the lesson units are for high school kids, the lessons can be useful for adults and also provide a way to incorporate disaster education in school curriculums in India.  Also each lesson provides links to other relevant topics and papers.

Observations on Engineering Aspects of the Jabalpur Earthquake of 22 May 1997:

The Jabalpur earthquake of May 22, 1997, in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India, is an important event for India from the point of view of seismic preparedness and expertise in repair of seismically damaged structures. This is the first time that an M6 earthquake has occurred this close to a major city in India

The September 29, 1993, M6.4 Killari, Maharashtra Earthquake in Central India:

The 1993 Killari earthquake in central peninsular India is the latest intracratonic event to be responsible for a large disaster. The positive side of this tragedy is that it will provide new insights into geologic, engineering and cultural factors that control the distribution and degree of damage, which will aid in turn the development of a more effective hazard reduction program for peninsular India and similar intrapolate environments.

Garhwal Earthquake of Oct. 20, 1991:

On October 20, 1991, at 2.53 a.m. local time, an earthquake occurred in the Garhwal Himalayas in northern India. The earthquake caused strong ground shaking in the district of Uttarkashi, Tehri, and Chamoli in the state of  Uttar Pradesh (Figure 1). Official information indicates that population of about 307,000 in 1,294 villages were effected; 768 persons died while 5,066 were injured .

On Better Engineering Preparedness: Lessons from the 1988 Bihar Earthquake

The rather moderate sized (magnitude 6.6) Bihar earthquake of August 21, 1988 demonstrated clearly that the Indian Engineering profession is far from prepared for a larger earthquake. During the author's extensive travel within the areas affected by this earthquake, it became clearer that the engineering community should immediately initiate serious and coordinated efforts to prepare for the possibility of a large earthquake in many parts of India or nearby countries.
