IIMA Community Earthquake Reconstruction Effort (IIMACORE): http://www.iimahd.ernet.in/~iimacore/

IIMACORE takes lead:

IIMACORE has played its own role in relief efforts in the aftermath of the earthquake. Members of the IIMA community—faculty, staff and students—had involved themselves in direct relief, coordinating supplies to the affected areas through NGO networks, and providing support wherever needed. Since the relief phase has passed, IIMACORE has phased out its relief initiative effective from March 1, 2001.

Right after the quake, with in a few days the students of IIMA had put together a  data base under IIMACORE initiative steered by Prof Vijaya Sherry Chand to provide opportunity on the web to volunteers to enter their preferences for the resources or time or skill that they wanted to contribute towards disaster mitigation. The present information system ( DMIS ) is in fact a slightly improvised version of that application for not just the city of Ahmedabad but various states of  the country and in fact any where in the world. The contribution of  the IIMA students (Abhishek Rawat, Prashant Girbane, Rakesh Pande, Nilanshuk Haldar Namit Mehta and Phanikiran N. L.) and Faculty continues to be a major support for this initiative.

The students under the guidance of  Prof Pankaj Chandra, Prof  P R Shukla and Prof Devanath Tirupathi had also developed an inventory control system for relief material which was handed over to relief commissioner at Bhuj with in two days of  the visit of IIMA team of students and faculty. In due course the supply chain system may be also set up on the web so that coordination among various volunteers may become feasible and more efficient. Suggestions and support from various colleagues who wish to contribute to this cause are most welcome.

Many individuals and groups have contributed to the relief effort with money and material. We thank all of them here, since it has not been possible to acknowledge all the contributions individually. IIMACORE will not accept any donations (money or material) from March 1, 2001 (except for funds committed before March 1, 2001).

IIMACORE members plan to carry forward some of the work initiated into the long-term rehabilitation stage, through small groups or as individuals. Examples of these activities include damage assessment surveys, educational rehabilitation and supporting certain NGOs in the affected districts.

We once again thank all the volunteers and well-wishers who contributed to IIMACORE’s work.
