Bilham,
Roger: Global Urbanization and Increased Seismic Risk
By the year 2025
more than 5500 million people will live in cities - more than
our entire 1990 combined rural and urban population. The
growth of these giant urban agglomerations is a new experiment
for life on Earth. Tragically, a significant fraction of the
largest of these agglomerations (supercities and megacities)
are located close to regions of known seismic hazard. Go to http://cires.colorado.edu/~bilham/globalEQfatalities.html

G7
GEMINI Project, Global Emergency Management Information
System:
Even modest
natural disturbances can yield disastrous consequences on
human scales. Conversely, technological accidents can
result in major environmental degradation. The ability of
a nation to manage emergencies, rather than react to
crises, is critically dependant on the availability of
information that is linked through national networks.
Further, emergency management often exceeds the
capabilities of national organizations, necessitating
rapid, coordinated international response. Go to http://hoshi.cic.sfu.ca/epix/G7.html

Global
Volcanism Program:
The Global
Volcanism Program (GVP) seeks better understanding of all
volcanoes through documenting their eruptions--small as
well as large--during the past 10,000 years. The range of
volcanic behavior is great enough, and volcano lifetimes
are long enough, that we must integrate observations of
contemporary activity with historical and geological
records of the recent past in order to prepare wisely for
the future. Go to http://www.volcano.si.edu/gvp/
