JANCHETNA
- A Workshop On Disaster and Risk Management
CONSERVE
in collaboration with Habitat Polytech (HUDCO) and Deputy
Commissioner's office, Trains Communities for Disaster
Reduction. Disasters are an unavoidable part of the world's
future, just as they have been a part of its past. However, a
large earthquake, today would cause significantly greater
human loss, physical damage, and economic crisis than caused
by past earthquakes owing our burgeoning population,
uncontrolled development, and a construction practice that has
actually degraded over this century, Delhi is becoming
increasingly vulnerable to earthquakes with each passing year.
Despite this growing risk, there is no organized approach to
managing earthquake risk in Delhi.
In
every community, responsibility for earthquake/flood/cyclone
risk management is diffused, requiring effort from every
organization and each individual in the community. The various
responsibilities can be categorized into the three stages of
the "disaster cycle":
(1)mitigation and preparedness
(prior to a disaster),
(2)emergency response and relief
(immediately after the disaster), and (3)reconstruction and
rehabilitation (lasting several years after the disaster).
For
each of these stages there are important actions for which no
group is clearly responsible.
CONSERVE
with Habitat Polytech (HUDCO) has taken responsibility for
creating and promoting awareness of earthquake risk and
implementation of risk reduction projects in NCR of
Delhi. We are organizing a Workshop Exhibition with
Interactive Sessions and Mock Drill exercises for the
students, teachers, administrators, parents and members of RWA
of Delhi city on the occasion of the National Day for
Disaster Reduction. The highlights of the event "JANCHETNA"
are
-
Creating
awareness of issues relating to disasters - Delhi being in
the seismic zone for earthquakes.
-
Integrating
safety of school children and retrofitting of school
buildings, homes, and other buildings
-
Do's
and Don'ts during the disaster.
-
Increasing
knowledge of the earthquake phenomenon, vulnerability,
consequences and mitigation techniques.
The Chief Fire Officer will train students, teachers and other
participants in Mock Drill Exercises.
