| Bay region's inhabitants are agro-pastoralists.They survive by the complimentarity of low risk trees and livestock component of their economy practised on the region's poor sandy soils and high risk sorghum cropping in the clay soils.Sorghum stalks are stored as emergency fodder for cattle.Villagers mostly have to grow, gather or make what they need |

| Spatial:Bay region is an area of Southern Somalia lying 300km inland from Mogadishu.It is region of higher rainfall than the rest part of Somalia(Average 500-600mm).Social: Reciprocal grazing occurs by request and neighbouring villages are supposed to ask each other's permission before cutting polewood in others terrain |

Conflict Resolution Mechanism |
| There is conflict over trees in this region,especially on the clay plains in the north-west where the best soils and the best rainfall have drawn the attention of both farmers as well as for the preferred charcoal species,since local people are heavily dependent upon trees not only for sustenance of their animals but also for housing materials and a wide range of other products.Villagers are particularly worried about the steady disappearance of such useful trees |

| Villagers are worried about the steady loss of trees because of charcoal burning,charcoal burners cut too many trees and ultimately the fodder for animal becomes a problem |

Other Features of Institution |
| The villagers had some suggestions about their needs:1)A pole reserve should be the exclusive property of the village who spents time in protecting it.2)Grazing reserves may be shared with other groups but there should be no access to them for charcoal burners 3)Charcoal burning should take place in open access land place away from settled agricultural areas(8-15km) 4) Village chiefs or committees would have to manage the resources of the village 5)They may be given legal rights to watch the charcoal burners and see that trees of the right species and right ages are cut 6) Commnnal land rights should be organised by them |
