Objectives of the food festival
  • To provide a platform for popularizing traditional recipes made from lesser known crop varieties like Kodra (Paspalum scrobiculatum), Bavta (Elusine coracana), Nagli (Elusine coracana), Samo (Echinocloa colonum), Juvar (sorghum vulgare), Bajri (millet) and Makai (Zea mays). To help in conserving and popularizing such lesser known varieties.
  • To exhibit creativity and innovation of traditional knowledge holders and students.
  • To popularize the use of vegetables which are not consumed due to ignorance about their nutritional value. To prepare and serve varieties of delicious dishes from such unnoticed crops.
  • To provide a platform for herbal medicines based on traditional knowledge and innovations.
  • To encourage dialogue between students and innovators and thus encourage the spirit of innovation and creativity.
  • To provide a platform for organic farmers and help in creating market linkages for their products.
  • To present and popularize folklore, folk songs, folk tales, forgotten traditional music instruments.
Programme itinerary
  • Promotional campaign in schools and colleges to inculcate the spirit of learning about traditional knowledge vested in village communities
  • Pre-festival contests in schools and colleges pertaining to protection and conservation of environment and energy, as well as, awareness about organic products
  • Display of innovations, videos, films and database of traditional knowledge
  • Organising quiz and contests in schools
  • Performance by regional folk artists from Saurashtra and other places
  • Exhibition and sale by over 120 farmers with co-operation from local organizations and organic farming forum
  • Demonstration and sale of innovations by over 150 rural innovators from all over the country
  • Talks and discussion by experts
  • A programme to honour centennial mothers from the city
  • Recipe contest a week prior to the festival
  • Cross country focus on recipes with emphasis on representation from all over the country
  • Awareness campaign through auto rickshaws, TV channels, banners and pamphlets
  • Schools and colleges to be in involved in the campaign as well
Rules/Guidelines for the stall holders
  1. Only traditional and lesser known recipes will be allowed to sell. The method of preparing such dishes will have to be submitted in SRISTI office before December 5, 2009. If the recipes are not found in consonance with the objectives of the festival, the stall will be cancelled and the money will be returned to the stall holder.
  2. Stall size would be 10 X 10 feet. Further,
    • Behind the stall, about eight feet open space will be provided for cooking;
    • each stall will have two tables, two chairs, one tube light and one regular use power plug;
    • the water taps would be provided at a certain distance; stall-holders will have to fetch water for cooking from those water taps as per their requirement
    • for availing extra facilities such as fans, tables or chairs, tube lights, plugs, halogen lights, deep freeze, etc., stall-holders will have to inform us and deposit extra charges for the respective facilities before December 05, 2009. After the festival has begun, no extra facilities will be provided.
  3. Stall banner must be written in Gujarati & English with size of 6 X 2 feet, showing the name and rate of the dish. The name of stall holder and his village will be shown in smaller letters. Only one banner is allowed to put outside the stall.
  4. Deposit the stall charges in time and obtain your receipt. The stalls would be allotted on the first come first serve basis. Kindly get approval for products and prices, decoration of the stall, recipe, nutrition value etc., by 05 December, 2009.
  5. Keeping in view the nutrition value of the forgotten dishes and recipes, it is suggested to use limited oils and spices (Garam masala) in the cooking process. It is strictly prohibited to use preservatives or artificial colors and selling fast foods. The organization focuses on the dishes those are made from indigenous edibles. It should necessarily involve use of indigenous varieties like Kodra (Paspalum scrobiculatum), Bavta (Eleusine coracana), Nagli (Eleusine coracana), Samo (Echinochloa colonum), Juvar (Sorghum vulgare), Bajri (Millet) and Makai (Zea mays) and lesser known vegetations.
  6. Use or supply of plastic carry bags, thermocol glasses, or such material made from plastic is strictly prohibited in the traditional food festival. Keeping or selling water pouches is prohibited. (Breaching of these conditions on the part of any stall holder would result in immediate closure of his or her stall and no compensation will be given in such cases and they will not be allotted any stall in future.)
  7. A stall holder would not make any claim before the customers if he or she does not have proper ground, proof or evidence to support it.
  8. No one will be allowed to distribute or sell any other material or literature or use the stall for any other purpose except for which the stall is allotted to you.
  9. If there is any change in the rules, you will be intimated. It is compulsory for you to attend the meeting of stall holders. Absent stall holder’s complain will not be heard later on. For the rules and their compliance, the decision of SRISTI will be final and binding on all.
  10. For display of posters, exhibition materials, books, creative games and awareness activities related to organic farming, food, health and environment, - priority will be given to institutional participation.
  11. Stall holders will be given identity cards with photographs for four persons to facilitate every day jobs and easy coming and going from the stall. This identity card should not be misused for relative or friend’s entry.
  12. One week before festival, a recipe contest will be organized. Every stall holder will have to participate in this competition. Information related to its nutritional value and quality should be shared with the media personnel.
  13. During the festival, if any calamity or disaster (fire, earth quake, rain, cyclone, riots or accident) causes any damage, the risk of the same would rest with stall holder. The organizers will arrange for fire brigade, ambulance, private security and police.
  14. The stall holder should use dustbin for disposing off the left over. Cleanliness should be maintained infront and behind the stalls.
  15. On the last day, the stall holders will be given the gate passes to leave the festival ground only after they have cleaned the stalls and their surroundings. On the last day vehicles will be allowed to enter after 10.45pm. The vehicles will not be allowed to enter the premises after 11.00am in the morning for bringing in goods.
  16. Due to any reason, if the stall holder cancels the registration by 5 December, 2009 then full money will be refunded by cheque; otherwise the organizers will refund 15% less money by cheque after the festival, by 25 December, 2009.

    Those not covered in the above mentioned categories can meet personally and get a stall booked for them. In this festival, we expect herbal products, organic products, natural ice creams, energy conservation and environment friendly products and so on.

  17. The possession of the stall will be given only after the payment of the stall charges are received in full.

  18. Stalls would be allotted on first come first serve basis.

  19. Institutional and awareness oriented parties will be given priority.

  20. The stall holders will have to comply with all rules and guidelines strictly in letter and spirit.

  21. If you have any specific requirement or suggestion regarding the stall, please give it in writing at the time of paying the money.

  22. Any discussions regarding stalls would be welcome at SRISTI’s office during 4 to 6 in the evening.

  23. It must be distinctly understood that the right of allotting or canceling a stall lies with SRISTI. It can not be challenged.
