EXPERT SEMINAR ON THE CREATIVE COMMUNITIES FOR SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLES

Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad

22 September, 2007

SRISTI is glad to announce the expert seminar on the Creative Communities for Sustainable Lifestyles (CCSL) at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA). CCSL is an ongoing research on the role of grassroots innovations in promoting sustainable lifestyles in everyday lives.
ABOUT CCSL
The Creative Communities for Sustainable Lifestyles (CCSL) project deals with grassroots innovations in everyday life and their implications in terms of sustainable lifestyles promotion. In particular, it compares some European experiences with the ones that can be observed in the emerging countries and, in particular, in their growing urban populations, with a specific focus on Brazil, India and China.
The project is part of the Task Force on Sustainable Lifestyles, within the United Nations 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production, usually called Marrakech Process.
The project has been collecting case studies in Brazil, India and China and discussing them with civil society organisations in the three countries, through a programme of seminars and workshops.
SEMINAR OBJECTIVES
The Expert Seminar is a milestone of the Indian programme of CCSL (Creative Communities for Sustainable Lifestyles).
The Expert Seminar proposes to discuss with Indian NGOs and other experts some creative communities initiatives in India (focused on Ahmedabad area) based on a cluster of creative community cases that were collected by SRISTI. In particular, the discussion of seminar will focus on three topics:
• Sustainable lifestyles: in which sense these cases can be seen as an anticipation of viable sustainable lifestyles in India?

• Creative Community/Individuals: what is the meaning of the term “creative community/individuals”, as it emerges from these cases?

• Replication: how these cases could be improved and replicated? What structures, platforms and tools would have to be developed to enable their replication?
In parallel with the Expert Seminar, a Design Exercise will be organized aiming at the visualisation of creative communities cases. The Design Exercise, not open to the general public, is targeted at design teachers and students.
ORGANIZATIONS INVOLVED
The CCSL project is coordinated by DIS-Indaco Politecnico di Milano, Italy and Strategic Design Scenarios in Belgium, and supported by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and promoted under the United Nations’ Task Force on Sustainable Lifestyles, lead by the Swedish Ministry for Sustainable Development.
The CCSL INDIA PROGRAMME is co-organised by the CCSL central team and the Society for Research and Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies (SRISTI), Ahmedabad, India. SRISTI is a non-governmental organization setup to strengthen the creativity of grassroots inventors, innovators and ecopreneurs engaged in conserving biodiversity and developing eco-friendly solutions to local problems. SRISTI was set up to provide organizational support to the HBN. The objectives were: systematically documenting, disseminating and developing grassroots green innovations, providing intellectual property rights protection to grassroots innovators, working on the in situ and ex situ conservation of local biodiversity, and providing venture support to grassroots innovators.
The National Institute of Design (NID) is the partner in charge for the organisation of the Design exercise.
