26th Shodhyatra, Jan 3 - 9, 2011 (East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya)


Laitkynsew village is famous for the living root bridges, which were built across the local monsoon-fed river by the members of Khasi and Jaintia tribes. They brought the secondary roots of trees on either side of the river to the opposite side and embedded them. Gradually with time, these roots grew and strengthened, giving rise to the present day living root bridges. Smit, a place in the Shillong district, where the shodh yatra ends is widely known as the Khasi culture center.

How to reach Laitkynsew village, Sohra (Cherrapunji):

The nearest Bus/ Railway Station is Guwahati (Assam) and Airport is Shillong. The participants should reach Guwahati latest by the morning of 3rd January 2011 only then they will be able to arrive at Laitkynsew village by afternoon/late afternoon.
Buses/taxis are available from Guwahati to Laitkynsew (Total 242 km) which take 7-8 hours for the entire journey. Participants should reach the village Laitkynsew before 04.00 p.m. as no transport is available after 04.00 p.m. All participants are requested to reach Guwahati to Laitkynsew by their own efforts.

Distance between Guwahati to Shillong is 175 km (Total fare Rs. 150-250/-). In shillong, bus stand is near to Anjali Cinema. From Anjali cinema, TATA sumo and taxi are  available for Sohra (Cherrapunji), total distance 50 km and fare is Rs. 50/- per person. From Sohra (cherapunji) to Laitkynsew distance is about 17 km for that you have to hire private vehicle.
