It is almost trite to say that product and services must be specially designed for the disadvantaged people to reduce their drudgery and make the development process inclusive. All of us take a cup of tea in the morning and during the day to charge our batteries. However, seldom do we realize the pain of the tealeaf pickers. Many of us might have seen the photos of tea gardens in the films or elsewhere. But, have we realized the pain thousands of women go through every day while picking the leaves and putting them behind the back in the basket. The movement of the hands while putting the leaves could cause pain in the shoulders and elbows. Does it matter? Perhaps the owners of the tea gardens might not realize how much improvement in the productivity can take place if only we could reduce drudgery and improve the process of tealeaf collection. why are design schools and academics disconnected with many real life problems of socially disadvantaged people for so long? why are not the positive efforts of some of the faculty members who really mean a lot in this regard are not being leveraged by the policy makers? will designs of future be frugal, simple and user- reassembled? will Asian culture reassert in shaping the designs of future? |

can we learn from insurgencies worldwide and in India and deal with the problem in a compassionate manner so that innocents do not suffer. After all the naxalism has forced state to at least tacitly admit that it has been exploiting the poor people for so long with impunity. without these disturbances, may be we could have continued exploitation for another century. let us not paint all naxalites with the same brush, just all police offcials are not bad. |

why do we try to under stand tribal aspirations only through arundhati roy or naxalites or insensitive police administrators? should not narrative of tribals also have a place of its own. To paint any one
in black and white is to deny justice and fail to understand how autocracy cam never breed democracy with all its pitfalls. |

25th shodh yatra taught us many lessons. some are being shared in a series of posts here and in dna. I am sure that many of our perceptions will not match romanticised view of arundhati roy or others who consider tribals as backward and in need of emancipation by outsiders. lett us debate an alternative vision in which tribal voices will have much greater say than has been allowed by state, intellectuals and the police of course. |
